The scientific revolution has brought about a tremendous change in the
civilizations of the globe. It is the scientific revolution that made the
industrializaiton of the world possible, and has lead to the reduction of
poverty world wide bringing a global increase of material wealth like none
ever seen before. Though the scientific revolution is still underway, it
has historical roots in the ancient world.
Before Isaac Newton there was Euclid, and before William Harvey there was
Galen. In fact, a rich heritage of greek and roman scholarship helped the
experimenters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries make their landmark
discoveries. Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, and Archimedes stimulated the study
of physics and mathematics. Similarly the study of biology was vastly affected
by the works of Hippocrates, Galen, Dioscorides, and Theophrastus. The works
of these philosophers and more are available here at this online library.
